For Parents

What to know before you come

Everything parents need to prepare for a visit to Haven Paediatrics — from getting a referral to understanding what happens after your appointment.

Getting a Referral

A valid GP referral is required to access Medicare rebates for your specialist consultation. We recommend visiting your regular GP first, as they can provide a referral addressed to any of our paediatricians. If you do not mind which paediatrician you see, your GP can simply address the referral to Haven Paediatrics. The referral letter will typically include a summary of your child’s current concerns, relevant medical history, and any investigations already undertaken.

A GP referral is valid for 12 months and covers all consultations relating to the same condition within that period. A referral from another specialist is valid for three months. You are welcome to book an appointment without a referral; however, Medicare rebates will not apply, and the full consultation fee will be payable.

Your First Appointment

Initial consultations at Haven Paediatrics are typically 40–60 minutes long. This extended appointment time is intentional, allowing us to provide the highest standard of care.

During the consultation, the paediatrician will review your child’s medical history, current concerns, family history, and the results of any previous investigations, such as X-rays or blood tests. At the conclusion of the appointment, they will discuss their clinical assessment and outline any recommended next steps—whether that involves further investigations or follow-up appointments.

After the appointment, you will receive a letter from the paediatrician summarising what was discussed and outlining the plan moving forward. Your GP will also be kept informed, ensuring care can be seamlessly coordinated and handed back when appropriate.

What to Bring

Please bring your child’s Personal Health Record (Red Book), referral letter, Medicare card, and any previous specialist reports, school correspondence, or therapist assessments. If your child has had recent blood tests or imaging, please bring those results as well. A list of current medications, including dosages, is also helpful, although this information is usually included in your GP’s referral.

For neurodevelopmental appointments, please also bring any relevant school reports, school letters, and reports from psychologists, speech pathologists, and occupational therapists.

If, like us, you prefer to be prepared, you are welcome to send this information to our reception team before your appointment. We can then save it to your child’s file ahead of your visit.

Fees & Billing

Haven Paediatrics is a private billing practice. Consultation fees vary depending on the complexity of your child’s presentation, the length of the appointment, and the paediatrician you see. A Medicare rebate is available with a valid GP or specialist referral. The full consultation fee is payable on the day of your appointment, with Medicare reimbursing the applicable rebate directly to your nominated bank account. Please contact our reception team for our current fee schedule.

We accept EFTPOS or credit card; we do not accept cash. If your bank details are registered with Medicare, we can submit your Medicare claim on your behalf at the time of payment. Please let us know if you would like us to process the claim for you.

Developmental Concerns

If you are concerned about your child’s speech, language, movement, attention, behaviour, learning, or social development, a paediatric consultation is often the recommended next step. Many processes, including NDIS access, ADHD or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) assessments, and school support planning, may require a paediatrician’s assessment and clinical report. We recommend speaking with your GP as the first step.

Our paediatricians are experienced in supporting families through these processes and can provide the necessary documentation where a diagnosis is made or additional support is required.

If further assessment is recommended—such as a multidisciplinary autism assessment or psychoeducational testing—your paediatrician will discuss the appropriate pathway and refer you to suitable specialists or allied health professionals.

Urgent & Emergency Care

Haven Paediatrics is a specialist outpatient clinic and is not equipped for medical emergencies. If your child is acutely unwell, having difficulty breathing, has had a seizure, or you are concerned for their immediate safety — please call 000 or go directly to your nearest emergency department.

For general health advice between appointments, call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84), which is available 24 hours a day. For non-urgent questions about your child’s care or an upcoming appointment at Haven, please contact our reception team and we’ll do our best to help.
